Can You Do Your Own Furnace Checkup?
It is possible to save some money each year by doing your own furnace checkup. A preventative maintenance checkup on your furnace is similar to a checkup done on your car at certain designated mileage intervals. The auto mechanic will do certain standard changes of items that can only be used for a certain amount of time before wearing out, like spark plugs and filters, for example. This needs to be periodically for your furnace as well, and most people have this done in the fall or early winter so the furnace can be ready for the cold season. If you do wish to attempt this yourself, below are some of the main things to do and to check.
The blower is certainly an important component of the system. This must function properly to distribute warm air throughout your home. There are a few things you need to check in this area. First of all take a close look at the belt. Be sure it is not fraying or worn. You can also check to see the tension on the belt is correct by pushing on it in the middle of the open span between the motor and the fan itself. If it deflects about one inch, then the tension on belt is correct. Also, make sure the fan turns easily and doesn’t make any funny sounds because it is rubbing against something. The motor shaft also needs lubrication periodically. There are lube ports near the ends of the shaft, and a light weight high quality motor oil should be used. Don’t use spray lubricants in the furnace because they will tend to attract dust, and the odor will be spread all over the house when the fan is turned on.
Take the air filter out of its slot and inspect it. It should not be dirty, and if it hasn’t been changed or cleaned since last winter, chances are it needs changing. These are not expensive items, and it is advisable to purchase two or three at a time so that you will have a new one ready when needed. As with a car that has a dirty air filter, the furnace cannot work properly or efficiently if the air filter is clogged.
Take a look at the pilot light to be sure it is still lit. Most people don’t turn off the pilot flames on their furnace, and they rarely go out by themselves. This can happen, however, and this author suggests calling a service technician to relight yours unless you know what you are doing and can do it yourself. Remember, you will be lighting a match and opening a gas line, so it is risky to do this if you have no clue.
Lastly, it is a good idea to vacuum around the furnace area. Most furnaces are installed in out of the way sections of the house that are not often visited and rarely cleaned, if ever.
